Hi,
Was multitasking and installed what I believe was a fake Google Chrome update. Based on some quick Google searching, I'm pretty sure this scam has been linked to something called a Zeus banking trojan. Guessing that means I've installed some sort of keylogger.
File was called Chrome.exe and digitally signed by Air Software. Running Windows Vista on an old Dell Inspiron17. Basic McAfee AV.
For months I've been getting an auto Java update prompt on startup, located in the bottom-right toolbar, which I've been ignoring (gets blocked by Windows) and then closing. Today when using YouTube on Firefox (I generally use Chrome, but have a YouTube downloader built into FireFox) it prompted me that Java is out of date. I rebooted, allowed that Java update to install, was distracted working on several other tasks on Chrome, and then saw the fake Chrome Update pop up. Followed the steps blindly, as I was distracted.
Jul 17, 2016 The fake Urgent Chrome Update just appeared on my screen while reading a post on FB. I knew it had to be fake as Chrome doesn't ask me ever to download an update and besides that the URL was not Chrome either. See attached word doc where the URL is shown first and below is the actual URL for the 'Download' button. Over time it took on a different form and became a fan sequel to Conker's Bad Fur day. I get almost 100% in this playthrough but fall just a bit short. It's incredibly fun, can be hilarious at times, and worth a playthrough even though it can be a little tough at parts, especially when you play hard mode. Hello,
I had chrome open in the background and a pop-up appeared saying that chrome needed to update. I haven't ever manually updated chrome from what I remembered, so I thought this was normal. I clicked okay and it downloaded an installer. I opened it and blindly clicked yes to the security pop-up thing, the one that asks for permissions. I unchecked a bunch of optional things, which I found weird but for some stupid reason I still went forward. I installed it and then felt really suspicious after googling around. I still had the .exe file, it is named 'Google Chrome.exe'. I opened it so that I could check the company on the permission pop-up, and it's from a company called 'Payments Interactive SL'. I denied permission after checking this. I am posting here because nothing seems to have changed, but I really think it was a virus because of the strange company name and the many 'optional' files that were junk and ad things. There are no pop-ups, strange redirects, or slowdowns as far as I know. I am using Windows 8. I scanned my computer with Avast (only a quick scan) and it found nothing. When typing while Avast was scanning, my keyboard kept lagging occasionally. I would type quickly and the letters would appear slowly. I think maybe it was just because Avast was scanning, but I am noting it just to make sure.

EDIT: Unfortunately it is late so I am heading to bed, but I will come back as soon as possible.
EDIT 2: Update: when I open anything that shows files, it occasionally crashes and restarts. For example, I opened the recycle bin and it crashed. I also opened the file explorer bookmark and it crashed too.

Another update: Random programs actually seem to be crashing immediately after starting them. Steam has now crashed after starting it. Explorer.exe reset itself, I think by design, but I had to reset Steam on my own.
